Volunteer F.A.Q.

Check out our VOLUNTEER F.A.Q. for any individual or organization considering serving as a Good Neighbor Settlement House, Inc. volunteer. Don’t see your question on the list? Feel free to contact our Volunteer Manager at (956) 542-2368 or bbradford@goodneighborsettlement.org.

1. Who can volunteer?

All individuals and groups are welcome! However, if you are under the age of 18, it’s best to check what activities/projects we have available for youth and children under 14 years of age. Also, please bring a parent or guardian to supervise during your shift.

2. What will I do as a volunteer?

Volunteer activities include meal preparation, set-up of the dining hall, serving of food and drinks, and facility clean-up. Volunteers are always needed for breakfast and lunch shifts. Please sign in when you arrive and you will be assigned tasks and instructions. Staff will be on-site to answer any questions.

3. What should I wear?

Wear comfortable “work” clothes and closed-toe shoes (i.e., jeans, short-sleeved shirts, tennis shoes) Please do not wear sandals, halter or tank tops, short shorts, etc. For those with longer hair, please wear your hair up and off your face. Hairnets and beard nets will be provided to work and serve around food areas.

4. What should I bring?

If you are a new volunteer, please bring your state ID or Drivers License. You will be required to fill out a Volunteer Information Form and Consent Form. We will supply hairnets, disposable gloves and aprons, but feel free to bring your own.

5. Can a large group volunteer?

Absolutely! We are happy to have volunteer groups of any size. Please bring the exact number of volunteers originally indicated. If you cannot fulfill your commitment or if there will be fewer volunteers than expected, please let us know at least one week in advance. This will allow us to make other arrangements.

6. How do I acquire community service hours?

Please bring any community service paperwork (Municipal Court forms, log sheets, etc.) to the front office along with your state ID or Driver License when you volunteer. Staff will approve/sign-off on hours the day they are completed. Staff will not approve/sign-off on hours on a later date. Any individual not completing hours for two consecutive months will be asked to return to the reporting agency. Every 25th of the month, completed hours will be reported to county, state and federal agencies.
